Gustav Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus) was the Swedish king whose intervention in the Thirty Years’ War was instrumental in pre- venting Roman Catholic forces from crushing the Lutheran Church. His is an inspiring tale of self-sacrificing love for Christ and His Church! “Gustavus Adolphus is a hero of every nation,” says Samuel Rawson Gardiner, the English historian. June 1930 is the three-hundredth anniversary of the coming of Gustav Adolf to Pomerania to defend the political and religious liberties of Sweden by saving the religious and political liberties of the oppressed Protestants in Germany. This is an epoch in history, secular and religious, and every Lutheran, every Protestant, every educated person, should know about these glorious days. “It is doubtful whether the military annals of any nation offer a period more worthy of admiration than the eighteen campaigns of the Swedish army in Germany,” writes Prof. Charles Franqois Dominique de Villers. In "Gustav Adolf—The Greatest Lutheran Layman,” William Dallmann (1862–1952) tells the story of the heroic Swedish king from the perspective of a 20th century Confessional Lutheran.

This is a concise biography of one of the few statesmen and generals of history who actually did live up to heroic reputations. It is written in the educated language of past generations (we had a immigrant pathologist in our laboratory recently who informed us he could not handle the English vocabulary and syntax that largely expired in the late twentieth century, which may explain the difficulty another reviewer had with this).

Gustavus was admirable, to me, most of all for his Christian charity. His chief opponent, the count of Tilly - who had been responsible for the terrible massacres at Magdeburg and other cities in 1631 - was mortally wounded in early 1632. Gustavus sent his personal physician to Tilly in a vain attempt to save his life. (In contrast, when Gustavus lay wounded on the battlefield of Luetzen, Imperial soldiers, coming upon him, finished him with gunshots - as described in this short book and others, e.g., the Osprey series).

The Midnight Lion Gustav Adolf The Greatest Lutheran Layman William Dallmann 9781891469015 Books Reviews

This little book put out by Repristination Press reads with the staccato of a machine as it retells the exploits of "The Midnight Lion". For those that don't know, The German Languages have a habit of coordinating the points of the compass with time of day, Midnight corresponds to North. Hence Midnight Lion or Lion of the North, as Gustav Adolf was king of Sweden. He is considered the greatest Lutheran Laymen because he saved Lutheranism, and Protestantism in general from be squashed under by the papist armies of the Thirty Years war. This book tells his story in a concise brief manner.
This is the second reading I have given the book, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it in both readings. Much of it is material quoted from firsthand accounts with brief commentary here. The book never shy's from an accolade, but the accolades are well earned. Really every Lutheran should know who Gustav Adolf was, and with what tenacity, patience and fortitude he applied to the cause of Lutherans. This was a man whose foreign policy was truly ruled by the Golden Rule, and that meant going to war! He would not stand idly by as his brothers and sisters in the faith were raped pillaged and slaughtered by the papists, but he put everything at his disposal into the fight, at great personal cost. His greatest contribution was sheer military genius. He was often able to defeat much larger forces merely by employing superior tactics. To this day his methods are studied. In the end he gave his very own life, he refused to fight from behind the lines, but lead at the front, wounded many times in battle, he was killed in what became his final victory.
This small book could easily be expanded to a hundred times its brief size and not lose any of its charm, or interest. In fact it might perhaps gain a little readability were one to expand upon it. It's almost as if this little book is the outline to a bigger book, or maybe the Cliff notes. I finish reading it and I want more. I say it could gain a little readability; context is often treated too briskly. You get a great understanding for who Gustav is but none for who the other characters in the book are, except for perhaps an adjective before their name. For a person who has some general knowledge of the history and the geography this is more manageable. I do fear others might get a little lost. One should also note that much of this is written in an older English, that can perhaps be a bit confusing as others have noted in their reviews here. I'm not sure that this couldn't also be fixed a little, especially if the book were to be expanded.
I have read books that were written in a much clearer style (to say the least.) The subject was of interest to me, but the author wasn't able to keep me reading.
William Dallmann was head of the English-language branch of what was then called the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and Other States, or what is today called English District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The book tells in Dallmann's characteristically simple, forceful style of one of the great early heroes of Lutheranism, the young king of Sweden who turned the tide of the 30 Years' War before dying at the height of his success. Don't look for impartiality here; this is by a church leader for the faithful and is not shy about lauding the hero.
