I had a paper copy of this many, many years ago in grade school and had fond memories. However this didn't match those memories (few things do I guess) but I think the big issue was in my Kindle copy there were no illustrations. Having said that the book is a brief presentation of artillery from inception into the early 20th century although considerably less time spent on post American Civil War developments. Also some discussion about black powder and its characteristics, rifling, fuses, projectile types, purposes of various artillery designs and a bit on the sequence of orders in firing a artillery piece. The key word is brief which is not necessarily a bad thing; from the previous sentence it shows much material covered but each relatively briefly although I would say not superficially. The information is solid although probably is not the kind of stuff that will help with Trivial Pursuit or other similar 'civilian' games! What fleshes the book out is the extensive bibliography which could take the serious military buff into significant detail if they choose.Product details

good history
great book, but it is missing the illustrations, so it's kind of pointless!
Basic military history for all interested showing the history of artillery in the world.
Good Basic military history read. Factual
Well put together, well researched and well written. If you have any interest in the development of the science if Artillery this is a must read.
None of the illustrations were viewable-my fault? I don't know, but without them the book is just tedious.
Hmm, an illustrated history with no illustrations...
The kindle edition lacks images, so you end up missing images. There's no images to illustrate the visual points the author is making.
The book is public domain, there's plenty of places to find it online, so a nerfed kindle edition ends up being pointless unless you really need to be able to take this with you.
